The building was constructed in 1875 by Prince Ernst Ferdinand of Windisch-Graetz as his Viennese Palais. He eventually passed it on to his son Prince Otto who in 1902 married Archduchess Elisabeth Marie of Habsburg-Lothringen, granddaughter of the legendary Empress Sissi of Austria and daughter to Rudolf the crown prince of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The couple lived in this building together with their four children for several years.
