Greetings from SenegalStyle! We are an Anglophone family living in Francophone Dakar, Senegal, West Africa. If you have always wanted to learn French (or Arabic) abroad but can't afford the expense of living in Paris and don't want your passport flagged for going to an Arabic country, Senegal is the best location for your study or travel needs! The level of French spoken (and taught) here is the highest outside of France and as Senegal is a very calm Muslim country as well (Islam 'light' I call it!) there are many Islamic scholars that can teach you Arabic as a language for journalism students for example. I am American myself, having moved here in 1999 with my 3 children, all of whom went to Senegalese schools and are fluent in both French and English. All are adults now and the oldest two have moved back to the US for university, graduated and are now working. My youngest (son) is 20 yrs old and is a student here in Dakar. Because I'm the 'cool mom' on the block with football parties, chess clubs, and mentoring young people in general, our home is welcoming to everyone, Senegalese friends of my son and visitors to this lovely country as well. You will meet fellow travelers and other students and make friends that you will remember the rest of your life. Meals, both breakfast AND DINNER are priced separately (5,000cfa a day in local currency, about $8) so you don't have the expense (and worry!) of taking a taxi for eating out every day. I'm a really good cook and can accommodate vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free diets as well as 'throw down' southern style for people who just like to eat!
