I chose to stay Karen about 3 months before my trip. We were able to connect on Whats' App and get to know each-other a bit, which made the solo trip to Costa Rica less intimidating. She even helped arrange my transportation from the airport to Cartago ( her friend is an Uber driver who contacted me on What's App when I landed in San Jose). It was such a relief and he was super nice! She was there to greet me when I arrived and introduced me to her live in boyfriend, who has also become a friend to me. She will say her english is bad, but this is not true! She also had food prepared for me after my long trip, the nicest! She is eager to share her love of Cartago with you and help you navigate. I could not have had a better first homestay. Also, breakfast was provided, the bathroom and bedroom are very clean, and you have a lot of closet space. Karen and boyfriend have some of the largest hearts! I also now have two new friends in Costa Rica. Cartago might seem far from what everyone talks about in Costa Rica but I love this town, it's full of history and some of the nicest people.
