In the past, before the Liberation, there was a trench (channel) here, and the passage was called Halka Porta (Halkalı Kapusı). To the west of the square, cemeteries extended, and the square itself was associated with important events. During the socialist era, until 1989, it was known as "Dimitar Blagoev."
