Nimal's Homestay is so much more than just a place to stay. Nimal and Chani are two of the kindest people I have ever met: their welcome was incredibly warm and that did not change throughout my entire stay. The fact that I arrived during the birthday party they had thrown for another guest already told me they absolutely go the extra mile to make our stay a special one. Their love for their own country is almost tangible, and they will do anything to show their guests how beautiful their island really is. Every time we passed a special plant or flower, every time they saw something move, they immediately grabbed my attention to make sure I wouldn't miss out on something beautiful and rare. The same goes for the food: Nimal and Chani (and sometimes even their awesome kids!) are incredibly good cooks and every meal is an amazing experience, with only the best ingredients and so much care you really taste the difference. In my first week Nimal took me on a 5-day trip to see some very special places, and as a local, he can show you things you never even knew existed. He does everything he can to keep his promises and goes out of his way to make you absolutely happy. "If you're happy, I'm happy", is his mantra, spoken every time with the widest grin imaginable. And boy, was I happy during this time! But what no one could have foreseen, and what even they couldn't help, was that in my last week my dream holiday turned into a nightmare. I received the message that my father was dying, while at the same time the whole country went into a lockdown because of corona - I was stuck on the other side of the world while I desperately needed to go home, and had no way of getting there. Even during this period, while I was angry, desperate and incredibly unreasonable, Nimal and his entire family stood by me and kept looking after me with so much love and care, I don't know what I would have done without them. They treated me like family and I never felt alone. And that's what a stay at this place feels like, if you're willing to open yourself up for it: a stay with your own local family. It's a beautifully authentic Sri Lankan house, so no, there is no hot water, and yes, sometimes local creatures find their way into your room - but that's what makes it beautiful, that's what makes it real. No spider in your room can ruin the amazing view when you wander onto either one of the balconies surrounded by beautiful trees, where you can watch incredible exotic birds, squirrels, mongoose, lizards, bats and even monkeys throughout the day and night. If you're looking for a truly authentic and beautiful Sri Lankan experience, and you choose to stay with Nimal, you shall definitely not be disappointed. But please, please promise me you will treat them with the love and respect that they deserve. I came to make friends, but I'm leaving with family, and I want to see them treated as such. I will definitely be back for them.

Kusal and his wife were very friendly. The rooms were okay, but hot, without aircon and a lot of mosquitos. Our stay was supposed to be 8 days, but after 2 days we had to check out, because of their 2 dogs barkeing outside most of the night and a bit noisy train, we didn’t get much sleep:(

Chani and Nimal made us really feel at home in their family. Their warm wellcome on arrival lasted till the last second of departure. Chani is such a warm caring person and above all a great artist in the kitchen; a cooking lesson with her is quite an experience, especially when accompanied by a walk in the surrounding forest when she points out the various ingredients for her meals. From her and Nimal and their oldest son Danith we learned so much about Sri Lanka and we are gratefull for that. Their help to create excursions that fitted our physical disabilities was magnificent. The room-en-suite with balcony (and forestview) was comfortable and well equipped with fans. The many birds and butterflies, the squirels and the far away monkeys completed the scene. The quiet fisherman's village of Dodonduwa with it's pristine beach, away from the touristhub Hikkanduwa, is a real jewel along the coast. We hated to leave and we long to return. We don't think we could have been better off. Thank you Chani, Nimal, Danith and Thurya for these wonderfull 11 days. It was a tru 'homestay' with excellent service and good value. We wish you 'full-house' for the years to come.

We arrived at our lovely Homestay after two very hectic weeks cycling around the sights an d sounds of Sri Lanka. lt was pretty tiring not only cycling but sight-seeing as well. So when we arrived early to the Homestay, the family made a real fuss of us both from the minute our Tuk-Tuk dropped us at the gate. The accommodation was perfect, our own separate room with en-suite and a balcony where you could sit, read & relax and listen to the birds. The 3 children (22, 19 & 15) made a real fuss of us and were very knowledgeable on Sri Lanka and were always happy to sit down, have a chat and answer any of our questions. ln our first two weeks of travelling we though we had some great food, but here this was a level up again. Both Chani and Kusal are excellent cooks, real authentic cooking and plenty of it. They were only to happy to explain the recipes and show you where they had sourced many of the ingredients. Happy to cook whatever you wanted, great fish market. Both breakfast and dinner were excellent, better than any restaurants. Don't miss out on a Chani cookery lesson, so insightful, in the space of two hours we saw and helped produce 6 great Sri Lankan dishes, a real experience. Having had two hectic weeks we really only wanted to relax and visit the beach, which is exactly what we did. But it is clear Kusal has a real knowledge of all things Sri Lankan and was always happy to suggest potential trips out i.e. snorkling. We did however visit the: Tsunami museum; Moonstone mine; Turtle hatchery and the Weaving/Batik workshops. All were pretty local. The family just allowed us to use their home as if we were part of the family, we had a truly great experience and would not hesitate in recommending any of our friends to visit Dodunduwa and stay at the Nimal Homestay. Just PERFECT!

Nimal and Chani welcomed us with big warm smiles, when we arrived. Their food is fantastic and every meal is a real treat. They went the extra mile several times a day, to make the stay great for us and our two kids on 6 and 3. We stayed in two rooms in the second floor with a big balcony connecting them (15 sq.m.) The balcony has a nice view over a jungle scene, with monkeys in the morning and parrots and squirrels through the day. Nimal has extensive knowledge about the surrounding plants and wildlife and know all the right spots for great experiences. We can especially recommend to go snorkling with him in Hikkaduwa. Here we saw octopus, which he spotted camouflaged as a rock, then cought with his hands and let it escape in a cloud of ink. It was the most fantastic snorkling experience, even though it was very accessible, going out from a beach. Besides the colorful amazing fishes, the six year old was most amassed that we saw a shark. Only 80cm, but still pretty cool. Chani and Nimal has showed us a different side of Sri Lanka, and we are very happy that we stayed with them for eight days. Eirik, Martha, Jo & Anniken

Kusal and his family were so overwhelmingly welcoming! It is a great start/end to your holiday as he can drop you to the airport He took us to local cinnamon farm, showing us about local trades for making materials for clothes and rubber, then to a moonstone mine and a turtle hatchery. He has lots of knowledge on local life and great to speak to about Sri Lanka. We also had a cooking lesson which was interesting and great fun They are very accommodating and it’s a great place to stay to experience real life in Sri Lanka. Him and his wife Chani made us amazing home cooked Sri Lankan food and their home was lovely to stay in. Breakfast was amazing aswell! It was a lovely homestay with genuine people and made us feel very at home! Thank you so much! If you’re looking for a personal stay with lots of Sri Lankan traditions please book this one! Couldn’t have been happier

We honestly cannot put in to words how amazing this Homestay was. From the moment we arrived we lived the dream. Nimal had ensured we had safe transport waiting for us at the airport which brought us to his beautiful home. The family are so welcoming, and Chani never stopped smiling! Their kindness was so humbling and their enthusiasm to do everything they can to meet your holiday needs was unbelievable. Nimal was able to take us snorkelling, on a lagoon safari, to a tea plantation, a turtle sanctuary, a moonstone mine, to see the whales and to a rainforest and to see the most amazing wildlife at one of Sri Lanka's most stunning wildlife parks. He is very proud of his culture and this enchanting country and rightfully so. Chani and Nimal prepared fresh local cuisine every day, giving us the opportunity to try the tastiest and healthy meals we will probably ever eat. Their home is really clean and spacious and their garden has exotic fruits, impressive trees and delicate flowers, and delightful wildlife. Our stay in this breathtaking country, at this delightful home, with these gracious, big hearted people has given us memories which we well treasure for a lifetime.

We were given a very warm welcome. As vegetarians, it can be quite difficult to eat well, but Nimal and Chani are wonderful cooks; just as much at ease with local as European cooking styles. This was definitely vegetarian heaven! The room was simple, but comfortable, and the balcony looked out on a lush, green area with mongooses and woodpeckers. Dordandua is a small fishing port, not a big tourist destination, but it was a very short walk to the beach where we watched the boats going out to fish, and where there were lots of rock pools to explore at low tide.

Merci encore!
